Benefits of Karate: Mental Acuity
One of the underlying benefits of Karate that doesn’t get much screen time is it’s ability to practice focus and develop mental acuity. There is much evidence to back up the benefits of Karate regarding attribute and soft skill development, however, academic performance is not one that is talked about as much.
The teaching of self defence in Karate teaches self and spatial awareness. The ability to focus on everything and nothing at the same time whilst being open to subtle changes in environment. This allows the brain to develop sharpness of mind through understanding the environment and mental readiness. For children, this is an incredible skill to develop at a young age. Twins has a sharp focus on developing spacial intelligence in their students by training children to notice details in behaviours, actions and being able to react to them fast and appropriately. This mental training can transcend the Dojo and often is reflected in the child’s schooling and academic life. Spatial intelligence and mental acuity are not specifically taught or trained in school, so participating in a solid martial arts program can indirectly train these thinking and feeling processes. The sharper the brain and quicker the decision-making, the easier it becomes for children to learn how to study, to obtain information, make connections and on top of all that, it promotes development of the highest order thinking task which is synthesis (the ability to create something new).
Awareness and the ability to make decisions is a by-product of Karate training and is practiced at Twins daily with the intention of developing student focus, spatial intelligence and sharpness of mind. Not only do these skills enhance performance as a Karate athlete, but are often transferred to academia unconsciously by the student. We have had much feedback from Teachers who have mentioned the student’s focus in the classroom has improved since training Karate.
